Bruno Guimaraes: Mikel Arteta shoots down injury reports in major Arsenal boost

Arteta shoots down Guimaraes injury reports in major Arsenal boost

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed claims that Bruno Guimaraes could be sidelined for weeks after the Brazilian missed the Gunners' Premier League opener through injury.

The £75m midfielder was a notable absentee from the matchday squad on Friday evening, as Arsenal eased past Coventry City 3-0 to make the perfect start to their title defence.

A few hours before kickoff, reports emerged stating that Guimaraes had picked up an untimely injury in the Community Shield, and Arteta confirmed that the 28-year-old had been feeling "slight tension" in his groin in the lead-up to the game.

However, when asked by reporters in his post-game press conference if Guimaraes would be missing for a number of weeks, the Spaniard insisted that would not be the case.

"We expect him not to be out for weeks," Arteta stressed. "Let’s see how he evolves this week - he wanted to carry on and that’s when you start to understand the character of the player, but I don’t expect that to be a big issue."

Bruno Guimaraes's injury record assessed after Arsenal blow

Big-money midfielders picking up injuries during their opening weeks at Arsenal is nothing new, as the Emirates faithful will no doubt remember Thomas Partey's early struggles after the Ghanaian barely missed a game for Atletico Madrid.

Partey only ever sat out six matches for Diego Simeone's side due to injury, before missing 19 games for club and country in his first Arsenal season and ultimately sitting out 76 contests in total during his Gunners career.

Guimaraes did not arrive in North London with a squeaky clean injury record, but the 28-year-old nevertheless spent very little time in the Newcastle treatment room, missing just 20 games for the Magpies and Brazil.

However, 14 of those no-shows came in the 2025-26 season, in which Guimaraes sustained a moderately severe hamstring injury in mid-February and was sidelined for just over two months.

The midfielder's only other injuries in black and white were minor hamstring and ankle problems in the 2022-23 campaign, which only forced him to miss six matches in total.

Can Arsenal cope without Bruno Guimaraes?

As Arsenal have the luxury of a 10-day break before travelling to Aston Villa on August 31, Guimaraes could very well make a swift return to the squad in the West Midlands if Arteta's comments are anything to go by.

The South American would likely comprise one third of Arteta's first-choice midfield when fully fit, alongside Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, but the Gunners' chances of retaining their title will not live or die based on his fitness.

The revitalised Myles Lewis-Skelly excelled in midfield once again on Friday night, completing 95% of his passes and winning three fouls, even if there was the caveat of Arsenal facing a newly-promoted team.

Nevertheless, such is the strength of a Guimaraes-less Arsenal midfield that neither Martin Zubimendi nor Mikel Merino made the first XI on Friday night, although the former was brought on for Rice midway through the second half.

Guimaraes's prospective presence against Villa and Chelsea would undoubtedly be welcome, but if his recovery does take a little longer than expected, Arsenal should barely be impacted.
